Can you guess what these are?
Well, they’re the Fimo People that Xi and Echo created the other day with the help of some unemployed wooden blocks they’d picked up from the living room floor.
They’ve been watching Natalie, who’s been doing a lot with Fimo lately. And as they peer up from under Natalie’s elbow or from around the corner of her shoulder, watching her make Fairy Food, they’ve been creatively stirred. They’ve been inspired. Just from watching Natalie and taking in her process making tiny apples, peaches, watermelons, cantaloupes, cakes, cupcakes, and pies, among other things (at this moment there are a couple dozen coconut halves being “fired” in our oven). And though Natalie’s been somewhat loathe to let the girls use much of the semi-precious clay she is making her miniature masterpieces from, she recently had the brilliant idea that she could just get the girls some Fimo to play with…
So this is just the latest in a series of things the girls have been creating since they got the little rainbow package of super-fun stuff.
Just seeing them there above, I’m sure you can get a sense of, but maybe not the full scope of understanding about what they represent. These dolls are, of course, the culmination of the simple processes we do a lot in our homeschooling the girls — they watch, they watch, they watch, we talk, and talk, and talk together about it a lot, then they venture in on their own in whatever ways we can manifest together — we do it all day long. But more practically speaking, these little Fimo People represent hours of our kids standing, sitting and watching in rapt attention over the course of weeks; hours of our kids entertaining and educating themselves making these dolls, some little cupcakes and cakes, cotton candy (which Xi invented), and rainbows, among many other wonderful things; hours of discussing, both with us and amongst themselves, all the various things that came up as result of the process in which they were involved, the art of creating, and the subject matter (e.g. one day we had a lesson on rainbows); and then hours more of them just sitting and playing with what they have created out of the stuff!
Do I sound like a Fimo rep yet? Well I would be…
But my point is just this — when we allow them to follow their interests and arrange our thinking around the concept of facilitating those interests, instead of just trying to “keep them out of our way” (so Natalie could work on Fairy Food “uninhibited”, for instance), and we let them play and develop their creative capacities further and further, and play and develop their motor skills finer and finer, and play and explore things as fully as we can manage, we’re not only developing brains, and educating minds, and all that jazz, we’re also living with happier, more self-assured, more enthralled, more easily and creatively entertained children. I find myself looking for what else that is just lying around the house or that we are already doing that could be a cosmos of entertainment and education and creative development for these sweet, enthusiastic girls.
So back to my original question, “Can you guess what these are?” I answered with what Echo calls them, but now I bet you get a better sense of what they represent to me…
